Lymphatic Massage Benefits Table of Contents

A healthy lymphatic system works alongside the heart to transport fluid and expel toxins and wasted materials from your body.

Sometimes, there can be a buildup of toxins within the body which then makes your lymphatic system work in overdrive. This can be straining on the body and sometimes leading to issues, including lymphedema.  Thankfully, therapeutic lymphatic massage can assist your body in moving the fluid within your body and expelling wastes from it.

Typically, lymphatic massage is performed by a massage therapist; however, you can receive similar benefits at home by learning how to perform it on yourself.

How can you do lymphatic massage on yourself properly, and receive the full benefits that it has to offer? Continue on to learn more about how to perform lymphatic massage at home.

What Is the Lymphatic System?

The lymphatic system is composed of your tonsils, adenoids, thymus, and spleen, which produces white blood cells that help fight off cancerous cells and other diseases. This system is a matrix of specific organs and tissues that help the body to remove toxins, wastes, and other unnecessary materials from your body.  It relies on smooth muscle to help move the lymph fluid through the lymph vessels. It also transports white blood cells back and forth from the lymph nodes into the bone matrix and removes fatty acids from the digestive system.

Who Can Benefit From Lymphatic Massage?

Anyone can benefit from the self-care practice of lymphatic massage as it helps the body to expel wastes and helps to detoxify the body. There are some people with certain conditions that will especially benefit from this technique.

Lymphatic massage can be especially beneficial for people who suffer from the following conditions:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Swelling or edema
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Stress
  • Skin conditions and disorders
  • Lymphedema
  • Migraines
  • Digestive issues and disorders
  • Arthritis

According to research, those who suffer from fibromyalgia can benefit more from a lymphatic massage than a regular therapeutic muscle tissue massage for relieving their associated depression and stiffness.

The specific benefits you can receive from a regular self-practice of lymphatic massage are:

  • Promotes healthy lymphatic circulation
  • Helps bring alertness
  • Help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Nourishing the mind and nervous system
  • Detoxes the liver
  • Minimizes cellulite by breaking down deposits in the fat tissues
  • Removes physiological blockages
  • Alkalizes the blood

You should consult with your physician before performing lymphatic massage on yourself, especially if you suffer from any health issues including but not limited to:

  • Circulation problems
  • Kidney issues
  • Infections overall
  • Blood clots
  • If you have swollen or infected areas
  • Heart conditions
  • Any form of cancer

Performing lymphatic massage while you have an infection could spread the infection further and cause more damage to your immune system.

How to Perform Self Lymphatic Massage

It is important to consult with your physician before starting any new routine like a self-lymphatic massage.

There are two main purposes of lymphatic massage: clearing and reabsorption.

Clearing Lymphatic Massage

Clearing uses a method of applied gentle pressure that acts as a vacuum to bring in more Lymph fluid to flush out the Lymphatic system. It is essential during a lymphatic massage to only apply enough pressure that the skin just slightly moves.

When working in the clearing stage of lymphatic massage, you will begin with the areas closed to the core of your body. For example, you will start with your collarbone area, move to your underarms, then to your elbows. But remember, you are always moving the skin over the top of your lymph glands toward the core of the body.

Upper Body Clearing

Supraclavicular Clearing
To clear this area, lay face-up on a flat surface, then cross your arms above your chest with your arms resting just below your collarbones. Slowly lift your elbows. As you slowly move your elbows, your fingertips will begin to apply gentle pressure to the area just below your collarbone. This is all of the pressure you need to stimulate the system to start flushing, or clearing, out old lymph.

Axillary Clearing
The axillary lymph nodes are located in your underarms. To clear this lymph area, lay face up with one hand above your head. Use the other hand to make a scooping action from top to bottom of your armpit toward your body.

Inner Elbow Clearing
To clear the inner elbow area, lay down facing up with your arm at your side. Use your opposite hand to lightly pull the skin just below the inside of your elbow toward to top of the inside of your elbow.  Be gentle enough with the skin that you only move it an inch at a time.

Lower Body Clearing

When performing lymphatic massage on the lower body, you want to clear the blocked lymph and send it to the groin area, a large collection of lymph nodes.  You will start at the area closest to the groin and work your way down the leg, but always guiding the direction of the skin toward the core of the body.

Place one hand on the inside of the leg and the other on the side. Slowly and gently pull the skin up and toward the hip area. Do this all the way down the leg.  Remember, if you can feel the muscles under the skin you are pressing too hard.

Reabsorbing Lymphatic Massage

During reabsorption, you will be working from the farthest part of the affected area to the center of the body.  Always use sweeping gentle movements to direct the lymph to the center of the body or your core.

Start at the hands, to the arms, to the shoulders, toward the underarms and collarbones.

For the lower body, place one hand under your leg at your calf, and the other on top of your shin. Moving one inch at a time, you will slowly guide your pressure up your leg to the groin area and toward the center of your core.

Making the Most of Your Massage

To reap the full benefits of your lymphatic massage, there are some things you need to do alongside your massage practice.

  • Drink plenty of water, preferably activated water, to flush the system properly. This is important after any type of massage to flush out the toxins and keep your body hydrated.
  • Stay nourished, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Stay active, focus on moving your body in a way that you will stick to a routine.
  • Remove processed foods from your diet. Nourishment is key to help your lymph system work efficiently.
